The History of Lakeland Terriers

One of the oldest Terrier breeds still known today, the Lakeland Terrier was kept by mostly farmers in the mountain and lake districts of England. Lakeland's were used to hunt and destroy foxes found raiding the farmland and sheepfolds. This was a very practical matter, but there was also sport in it. They could follow underground for tremendous distances. There are many records of Lakeland's going to ground for more than 10 days and surviving, although some paid the penalty.

1912 was when this Cumberland County, bred and raised breed, made its debut at the Kersurck Show. Here, a new Terrier club was formed and for two years it made considerable headway. Unfortunately, WW1 outbroke and word of the Lakeland Terrier was little to nothing until 1921. That year nine fanciers met at Whitehaven, in Cumberland. The name Lakeland Terrier was chosen at that meeting and there, the breed standard was drawn up. Shortly afterward the breed was made eligible for registration in the stud book of the Kennel Club of England. The Lakeland Terrier was accepted for registration in the AKC stud book in 1934.
